Mary and Laura Ingalls took turns gathering the eggs from the chicken coop each morning.  There was always plenty for the family's meals and Ma would sell some eggs to Oleson's Mercantile for extra income.  Here is Ma's best laying hen named Mathilda with a Rooster to protect her.
